He claims that his account of Kunta’s life in Roots is a combination of fact and fiction. Kunta Kinte was inspired by Haley’s ancestors, a Gambian man who was born in 1750 and enslaved before being taken to America and dying there in 1822. After being freed by his white friend, John Thornton, Kunta returns to Africa in 1822, and he dies there. After a long and difficult journey, Kunta is finally sold to a white man in Virginia. Kunta Kinte was born in 1750 in West Africa and was enslaved in the United States until his death in 1961.
